I loved this movie. I have to admit, angina I didn’t want to see it and had absolutely no expectations for the movie. The trailers, prescription at least to me, did not make it seem interesting at all. Needlessly to say, I was pleasantly surprised, and then some.
Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher. Both actors do nothing to excite me. I look at Ashton and think “Pretty Boy” and I see Kevin Costner and think “weird roles, horrible movies”. So in addition of its lack of appeal due to the trailer, then throw these two to the mix, it was just “eh”. It might have been the low expectations that made me appreciate this film so much, or the interesting story the movie told about the process that Coast Guards must go through, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and so did the people around me. They actually clapped when the movie was over. Yes, a movie about Coast Guards with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. People clapped.
The story starts off with Ben Randall (Kevin Costner, Waterworld, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves), the legendary Coast Guard rescuer, losing his entire crew but managing to stay alive during one rescue. He is asked to take a short leave by his Commander to cope with his loss, by teaching students how to become a Coast Guard rescuer and uses unorthodox methods to push the kids to their limits and “become the best they can be” as well as weeding those that couldn’t cut it.
One student, the cocky record-eyeing Jake Fischer who was a swim champion at his high school pushes himself to be the best despite Randall’s apathy towards him. In the end, they both discover something about the other, and Jake becomes quite the student underneath Randall’s training, with his raw talent and his internal drive to want to save and rescue others.
The downfalls: I couldn’t help but not take Ashton seriously in a few scenes. I still saw the pretty boy or the character from That 70’s show, but I’ll have to say that there honestly were times where I saw Jake Fischer and not Kutcher. If Kutcher continues down this path and chooses some smart roles, who knows, maybe his acting plate will expand and we’ll see a more serious Kutcher in the future and really see if the boy can act. Kevin Costner was on the other hand, simply terrific.
It’s an amazing story, and quite the tribute to Coast Guard rescuers. I had a whole new appreciation for their job, not that I didn’t before, but after this kind of movie and view what kind of vigorous training they go through, and how they risk their lives everytime they go out to sea, one can’t help but look at them in a whole new perspective.
If you have no expectations for this movie and have no idea what you’re looking for, I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it, and I recommend it.
